Medicare A, B, C and D

Start by understanding the parts of Medicare.

Each part covers something different. Parts A and B form Original Medicare; Parts C and D are offered through private Medicare-approved insurance companies.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and certain home health services.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Helps cover physician services, outpatient care, preventive care, medical equipment and certain medical services.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

A private-plan alternative for receiving Part A and Part B benefits. Many plans also include Part D coverage.

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover prescription medications through a standalone drug plan or many Medicare Advantage plans.

Original Medicare does not cover 100% of healthcare costs.

After the annual Part B deductible, Medicare generally pays 80% of the Medicare-approved amount for most covered Part B services, leaving you responsible for the remaining 20%. Part A has separate deductibles and cost-sharing. That is why the next decision matters: keep Original Medicare and add Medigap plus Part D, or receive your Part A and Part B benefits through Medicare Advantage (Part C), which often includes Part D.

Your two primary coverage paths

After Parts A and B, decide how you want to receive coverage.

This is the central Medicare decision. Medigap and Medicare Advantage are different paths and are not used together.

Path 1 · Keep Original Medicare

Original Medicare + Medigap + Part D

Original Medicare remains primary. A Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy can help with certain remaining medical costs, and a standalone Part D plan provides prescription coverage.

  • Use providers nationwide who accept Medicare
  • Separate Medigap and Part D policies
  • Premiums and coverage vary by plan and location

Path 2 · Choose a private Medicare plan

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

A private plan provides your Part A and Part B benefits. Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D coverage and may offer additional benefits.

  • HMO, PPO and Special Needs plan types may be available
  • Provider networks and plan rules vary
  • Copays and maximum out-of-pocket limits vary

Medicare Advantage plan types

Understand the letters inside Part C.

Medicare Advantage plans can be organized differently. These common abbreviations help explain how provider access and eligibility may work.

HMO

Health Maintenance Organization

Generally uses a defined provider network and may require a primary care provider or referrals.

PPO

Preferred Provider Organization

Uses a preferred network while generally allowing out-of-network care at a different cost.

C-SNP

Chronic Condition Special Needs Plan

A Medicare Advantage plan designed for people who meet specific chronic-condition eligibility requirements.

D-SNP

Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan

A Medicare Advantage plan for people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.

What matters most

A good recommendation starts with your actual healthcare.

The plan name or monthly premium alone does not tell you how coverage will work for you.

01

Your doctors

Are your preferred doctors and hospitals available under the coverage you are considering?

02

Your prescriptions

How does each plan cover your medications at the pharmacies you prefer?

03

Your budget

Do you prefer a higher monthly premium with more predictable costs, or lower premiums with costs as care is used?

04

Your travel

Do you receive care in more than one state or spend extended time away from home?

Common questions

Medicare plan basics, answered clearly.

Do I need both Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement?

No. Medicare Advantage and Medigap are different coverage paths. A Medicare Supplement works with Original Medicare, while Medicare Advantage is another way to receive your Medicare benefits.

Does Original Medicare include prescription drug coverage?

Original Medicare generally does not include routine outpatient prescription drug coverage. Many people add a standalone Part D plan, while many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D coverage.

Is the lowest monthly premium always the best choice?

Not necessarily. Provider access, prescription costs, copays, deductibles and yearly out-of-pocket exposure can all affect the total value of a plan.

Can MedigapRx review my current Medicare coverage?

Yes. Justin can review your doctors, prescriptions, pharmacy, current coverage and location to help you understand whether another available option may better fit your needs.
